Before clicking the send button, we encourage you to ask a friend or career counselor
to review and critique your resume! Grammatical errors, misspelled words, and incorrect
word usage are sure to hinder any chance of receiving an interview invitation.
After all, you worked so hard work on your resume you must get it the extra attention it
deserves.
Take the following steps to ensure your resume is top notch
Content:
- Run a spell check
- Ask a friend to do a grammar review
- Ask someone else to proofread
(the more eyes on your resume the more likely errors
will be caught)
- A subjective review of your resume can give insight into how others will view your
personal marketing materials
Questions to ask before sending off:
- Does my resume impress you? If not, why?
- Does my resume look original and not based on a template?
- Is the resume inviting to read, with clear sections and ample white space?
- Does the design look professional?
- Does my “qualification summary” immediately grab the reader’s attention?
- Is the length and overall appearance appropriate given the career level and objective?
- Do you have any ideas on how to make this a stronger document?
- Will this resume give me the chance to interview?
Design:
- Use white or off-white paper
- Use 8-1/2- x 11-inch paper
- Print on one side of the paper
- Use no smaller than a 10 point font
- Use non-decorative typefaces i.e. standard serif or sans serif fonts
- Choose one typeface and stick to it
- Avoid italics, script, and underlined words
- Do not use horizontal or vertical lines, graphics, or shading
- Do not fold or staple your resume
- If you must mail your resume, put it in a large envelope
