Job Title: Staff Accountant (Payroll Accountant)

Location: Oakland

Compensation: $64k-74k

Job Summary:

Looking for a dynamic role that will keep you on your toes? We have an exciting opportunity for an Accountant to join a leading company in the commercial energy industry. As a key member of the accounting team, you will be responsible for managing critical financial processes, including cash applications and payroll-related transactions. You'll use your expertise in tax laws and experience in similar roles to process payroll journals and reconcile withholdings and salary benefit payments. Key Responsibilities:

  • Process Lockbox checks received daily, tying total deposit to bank deposit amount and notifying bank of any misread checks or other deposit issues.
  • Process daily customer payments through utility billings.
  • Enter cash receipts for all ACH/Wire customer payments received daily
  • Prepare payroll schedules and records and you'll contribute to various accounting tasks, such as updating payroll files.
  • Monitor benefit withholdings, transfers to benefit administrators and reconciles account balances.
  • Monitor paid and unpaid leaves
  • Resolve payroll issues
  • Answer employee questions concerning payroll.
  • Prepare & Monitor Payroll Reconciliations, and other reconciliations as assigned.
  • Work closely with the Accounting Manager & SVP Talent to assure adherence to company policy and proper expense recording for management reports and financial statements.
  • Initiate and implement process improvements to increase team productivity and accuracy, upon concurrence with stakeholders.
  • Coordinate, review and/or Submit all required payroll regulatory & tax filings for CE and Affiliates.
  • Facilitate relationship with ADP payroll processor and prepare integrated transactions with ERP financial systems.
  • Cross-trained to provide support and backup for other Accountant team members, including intercompany allocations, reconciliations and transactional GL activities.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Accounting Manager/CFO.


  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance or similar work experience required.
  • Payroll certification, such as Certified Payroll Professional (CPP), would be a plus.
  • 2+ years of accounting experience with concentration in payroll function required.
  • Proficiency in Payroll Software, preferably ADP.
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable tax laws.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously to ensure on-time deliverables
  • Strong attention to detail, high analysis skills and the ability to deliver results in a fast-paced environment without direct supervision.
  • Self-starter and a proactive attitude.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel), specifically strong Excel skills.
  • A commitment to the values of the organization while demonstrating good judgment, flexibility, patience and discretion when dealing with confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Excellent organizational and verbal & written communication skills.
